The History of the Backpack

Before backpacks existed, children took their books to school with a book strap, which was basically a belt that they tied around the books and then carried with the extra length like a leash. This practice would later go out of fashion with the introduction of better solutions.

In 1938, Gerry Outdoors invented the first backpack with the zipper, but it was still intended for hiking and outdoor recreation. Between the 30s and the 60s, the book strap had mostly disappeared and children carried their books in a book bag or satchel, or another square-shaped briefcase-like bag. The proper backpack as we know it still hadn’t made it into the hands of school children.

In 1967, Jansport opened their doors, and around the same time, Gerry Outdoors was also making lighter, smaller backpacks than their more rugged hiking backpacks, called daypacks. It’s debatable who invented the modern school backpack, but Jansport and Gerry Outdoors had the idea for a smaller, nylon backpack at about the same time. Students at the University of Washington were snatching up the nylon backpacks at outdoor shops near the campus to use to carry their books, and the use of the backpack as a tool for school took off.

Today, Jansport is the largest manufacturer of backpacks in the world, and the backpack is considered an essential part of a school child’s kit.
